For a long time I toyed with the idea of a vampire novel that would focus on the vampire's immortality and not the thirst for blood. I am a peculiar man to write a vampire novel; I get faint if I have blood taken sitting up, and am generally phobic about the stuff. I recoil at the thought of someone biting me in the neck. But I have dealt with worse things. I spent a long time studying actual multiple murderers -- I had reason for my interest as my life had crossed paths with no less than three of them. After studying Erszebet Báthory, Gilles de Rais, Bittaker & Norris, and Robert Berdella, vampires were easy.
The two came together perfectly with my portrayal of Ella. At first I didn't have a clear idea of my little blonde protagonist, save that she was an abused prostitute who became a vampire and used her new powers to remake her life. But Ella took over the book as I wrote it and let me know what she wanted me to say about her. "The tale grew in the telling," as Tolkien put it.
